April 2014 – Space Coast Fishing Report

This months fishing has been up and down in the Space Coast area lately. With late cold fronts moving in and a lot of windy days, the fish have not been acting like they should be this time of year. One Day the fishing is hot, the next day it’s not. Hopefully the weather pattern will be more consistent soon and the fish will be happy fish again.

Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, and Banana River still have plenty of fish around, but as stated above, they have been here one day and somewhere else the next. The best way I’ve been finding Redfish and Sea Trout is to fish areas with plenty of mullet, which most of you already know. The topwater bite early in the morning has been good, and when the sun gets a little higher make the switch to a weedless jerkbait or shadtail for better results while sightfishing. On the fly rod, I have crab and shrimp patterns tied on that have been getting the bites.

Fly anglers Miles and his dad Bud from Georgia joined me on one of those better days in the Mosquito Lagoon, they had plenty of shots at laid up and cruising Redfish, getting a few fish to bite and only landing one of the smaller ones. This was the 1st Lagoon trip for Miles, so this fish is a little special.

Oliver and his buddy came down for Spring Break and had a fun day catching redfish and sea trout using D.O.A. Shadtails on a windy Mosquito Lagoon day.

Louis invited his dad Brian down from Connecticut for his 1st saltwater fly fishing experience. The winds was blowing way too hard for the Mosquito Lagoon flats so we tucked in the back country for some snook and tarpon action. Had a few tarpon bites but never came tight, small snook and jacks were keeping them busy.

Scott and Paul got some good eats on the fly rod this windy day in the Lagoon but none came tight. They did have some fun on the spins rods though.

Sergio from New York takes his family to Florida every year to enjoy a week of Disney World. One or two of those days, Sergio comes to visit me in the Mosquito Lagoon. This year he brought his son Jacob one of the days so Jake can catch his 1st Redfish. Mission accomplished, a happy kid and a proud father! Jacob even got to watch the Atlas V rocket launch when we got back to the ramp.

Day 2 – Sergio on the bow with a fly rod for a 1/2 day while son Jake is at Magic Kingdom with mom and sis. Great vacation for Sergio and his family, see you next year buddy!

Roley and Rick from Miami, FL. had lots of redfish and sea trout action using D.O.A. Shadtails. Here’s Roley with one of the bigger fish of the day.

Now is the time that Tarpon in the Space Coast will be starting showing up. As it starts getting warmer and Summer approaches, it will only be getting better! This year will be involved in a Tarpon Genetics Recapture Study taking DNA swabs from every tarpon over 30″ that is boated on my boat. March 2014 East Central FL. Fishing Report and News

Spring has officially sprung, but it still feels like Winter with what is hopefully the last cold front of the year which just moved in last night greeting us with some 25+mph Northerly winds today and temperatures in the 50’s.

Looking back to the last few weeks, the weather has been fantastic and so has the fishing! Redfish in the upper slot to over slot range have been schooled up and roaming the flats in the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River Lagoon, and Banana River. They have also been enjoying the 80 degree temperatures that we’ve been having and happily tailing in shallower flats which made for exciting sight fishing.

Sea Trout have also been around sunning themselves in some shallow water. They can be tricky to sight fish for but if you make a quiet approach at them and a soft presentation, you may have a chance.

Rob from Melbourne, FL. joined me in the Indian River Lagoon for some Sea Trout, Snook, and Pompano action using D.O.A. 4″ Shrimp and a 2″ Shrimp on a jighead for pompano. Rob even caught his biggest Sea Trout on fly this day.

Bruce from Oregon had some fun pulling on some Redfish and Sea Trout on his first time to the Mosquito Lagoon using D.O.A. Shadtails.

Tom who just moved to New Smyrna Beach from Kentucky caught his biggest redfish to date this day. Was tough dodging some thunderstorms but we had some small windows to sight fish.

Mike Neeley from Jacksonville joined me for 2 days in the Mosquito Lagoon. First day was windy and rainy so Mike popped some fish on D.O.A. Shadtails. Day 2 was the total opposite, sun was out and winds were light so Mike and Kirby stuck with the fly rods. Both caught Redfish on fly but the highlight of the day was Mike’s biggest Sea Trout that he’s ever caught on fly.

Peter from New Jersey had a tough time adapting to the style of saltwater fly fishing. After a quick lesson in the morning, he started to get the hang of double hauling towards the end of the day. He had shots at Redfish and Sea Trout all day missing some Redfish that ate the fly but did land a nice Sea Trout.

Josh from Oregon made some great casts at some tailing redfish in the Mosquito Lagoon, and here are the results.

This past weekend my buddy Honson Lau and I fished a fly fishing tournament over on the West Coast of FL. called the Salty Fly held at Little Harbor Resort in Ruskin, FL. This 2 day event is known to be the worlds largest fly fishing tournament in history. The first day is tournament day where the most combined inches of 2 redfish and 1 sea trout take the win. The second day is a poling/casting competition which is optional.

This tournament is loads of fun and is open to the public. If you haven’t been to one, you are missing out on a great event at a very nice venue. There were 100 teams entered this year where my team “RCI Optics” came in 4th place. Big thanks to Sam Root and all of the sponsors involved to make this tournament happen. February 2014 Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report and News

It’s been a pretty busy and exciting month so far for Native Fly Charters. Beside breaking in the new boat, the fishing has been really good!

Redfish are now schooled up in big numbers in the North Indian River, Banana River, and Mosquito Lagoon. They will cooperate if you approach them quietly and keep your distance. The lure that has been working best for me and my clients is a D.O.A. Shadtail rigged on a 1/8oz weighted hook. Any color will work, but we’ve been throwing whites. Fly fishing for these schools are possible but you need a super long cast to increase your chances, otherwise once the school gets too close to the boat, they will take off the other way. Baitfish patterns have been working well for these fish. For most of my fly anglers, I would mainly target tailing and cruising single fish instead of the schools just to get some one on one action.

Sea Trout have also been abundant on the flats. They are extremely spooky but aggressive eaters. If you can place a lure or fly in the zone without them scooting off, you will most likely get them to eat.

Black Drum have been around one day and gone the next. They have been pretty inconsistent and hard to feed at times. I don’t know what their deal is, but I don’t like it! That’s probably why I love to target them.

Martin from South Carolina joined me earlier this month on a day that never stopped raining on us. But that did not stop the fish from chewing. Some very nice Trout and Redfish were caught and once the opportunity came, Martin whipped out the fly rod and caught a little Red to end the day.

Andrew from Utah got his first ever Redfish this month. It took a while to adapt to the saltwater style of fly casting, but he got it down later in the day and had lots of shots at tailing and laid up redfish.

Mike from Montana also got his first ever Redfish that he worked very hard for. Windy conditions made casting tough, but he managed to feed a few tailing fish a fly.

Dale and Robb had a great day in the Mosquito Lagoon this day. Weather was perfect in the morning then started to get windy later in the day. They caught some hefty Redfish that were tightly schooled up in the hundreds on D.O.A. Shadtails.

Dave and Kim who I’ve met at the D.O.A. Lures events came down from North Carolina to do some camping and fishing in FL. This day started out good, but wind and clouds made things tough later in the day. Always a fun time having them on the boat!

On some days it’s way too windy and cloudy to fish the Mosquito Lagoon, so plan B would be to tuck way back in the backcountry for some small Tarpon and Snook. Mike and Al from the North East had to do just that. Al hooked an fought a nice snook on fly until it wore through the 30lb leader. Both jumped a few Tarpon, had over 20 eats, and finally landed one. That’s Tarpon fishing no matter what size.

Of course I get to have my own fun and fish with my friends once in a while so here are some pics of that.

January 2014 Mosquito Lagoon Report

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for visiting NativeFlyCharters dot com! This year is going to a special one for all my regular clients and new. Starting this year, we will be deck out in a brand new new skiff by Maverick Boat Company. A 2014 17′ Maverick Mirage HPX-S powered by a Yamaha F70. This skiff is a bit bigger then my old Maverick HPX-T and has more deck space for the comfort of 2 anglers up on the bow. It rides incredibly soft and dry, but best of all, it will still get skinny to reach those belly crawling redfish that we get into in the Summer time. If you fish an area that requires a lot of shallow water running, the HPX-Tunnel is the perfect skiff, but if you are looking into running tight creeks and shallow water and still take on some open water chop, look into the HPX-Sub6. I’ve been running the demo HPX-S until my boat is done being built (which will be very soon) and I am nothing but excited to own one and rig it up for the “Native Fly” style of fishing! I’ll have more details and photos of the new HPX-S soon enough.

On to the fishing, the water has been pretty clear in all 3 lagoons. With the cooler temperatures, the fish have been feeding best late morning to afternoon. Redfish are schooled up and big Sea Trout are scattered around in the shallows soaking up the sun. Black Drum can also be found in a few areas. If you can find a day where the winds are not howling 20mph, these fish should be easy to find if you know where to look, but I do NOT recommend burning the flats to do so. The push pole is your best friend!

Scott Winstead from Michigan joined me for a fly fishing trip in the Mosquito Lagoon. It was an action packed day with lots of tailing and belly crawling redfish that were aggressively taking well placed flies. The new Maverick HPX-S demo boat is shown in the pictures.

Scott had shots at some big Sea Trout but the one that fell for the fly was a nice medium sized one.

Andre from Orlando, FL. loves to fish but does not get to go out enough. He had a much needed day of catching some over slot redfish this day in the Lagoon using D.O.A. CAL Shadtails rigged on a weedless OWNER Twistlock hook.

Kershal Barfield from Stuart, FL. has been fishing with me for the last couple years on the day of his birthday with his dad, last year he got a big redfish, this year he caught a monster Seat Trout measuring at 29.5″ on a D.O.A. CAL Shadtail! Happy Birthday Kershel!

Some redfish made it to the boat as well.

Of course I get to have some fun in between trips and catch a few along with my buddies!

December 2013 Mosquito Lagoon fishing report

It was a windy Thanksgiving week and end of November. I’m thankful that it finally calmed down for a bit going into December making it fishable out in the Lagoon systems. Once the wind laid down and the sun popped out after weeks of wind, rain, and cool temperatures, it was a whole new world out there. The fish are now out and about sunning themselves in shallow water. Since it has been slick calm conditions lately, the fish have been extra spooky and some say that they have been having a hard time catching them. There are a few things to remember that might increase your chances of catching fish when they are being like that in cold/clear water.

1. Scale down your lures/flies so that it will not make loud plops when casting
2. Keep your distance when sight casting to fish. Stay as far as you can but make sure you keep a distance that you feel comfortable enough to make an accurate cast.
3. Slow down your retrieve
4. Use natural colors and nothing bright and flashy.
5. Use a push pole and not a trolling motor to keep stealthy, if you do not have a poling skiff, get out and wade.

Keeping those simple steps in mind can help increase your chances of catching spooky fish in the Winter time when temperatures are a bit cooler and water is clear.

Kyle and his Dad Kevin joined me on one of those windy days. D.O.A Shadtails in natural colors worked well for them.

Kelly coming in from Canada was in Orlando for a work conference and had a little bit of time to sneak out and fly fish the Lagoon with me. We got rained on for most of the morning, but did have a few opportunities where the sun peaked out enough for Kelly to get some shots in.

Jeff from California has never caught a redfish before, he can now scratch that off of his list of species to catch on fly.

Tim comes down from the Panhandle of Florida once a month to fish with me. Every time he comes down, he tends to beat his personal record redfish on fly or catch a new species on fly. This time, he beat his redfish record.

Tim was generous enough to let me get in on the action since we had big redfish swimming all around the flat. Thanks Tim, catching that fish felt good!

Mosquito Lagoon Guides Day Off

I get a lot of people that ask me “what do you like to do when your not guiding?”. Most people think that since I am a full time fishing guide, the last thing I want to do is fish.

For some guides/captains yes, but for me and a handful of others, all we can think about is going fishing on our days off. It’s a great way for us to get in on the action on the pointy end of the boat. It’s also a great way to stay on top of the fish and know how they are acting for upcoming charters.

Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, Banana River Report and News November 2013

Fishing in the Central East region of Florida during the month of November, you can expect some cold fronts beginning to move in, drier air, windier days, and schooled up fish. The water in the Lagoons are starting to clear up and water level is still pretty high as of now. With the water being so high, it gives fish a chance to spread out and seek refuge further back in hard to reach places like small creeks and way back in the mangroves. Take your time looking for these fish quietly either with a trolling motor or even better, the good ol’ push pole. Don’t be “that guy” that burns fishable flats and shorelines on full plane looking to bump up fish, you will just tear up the grass and put more pressure on fish that you are trying to catch. Stealth is the most efficient way to catch fish.

This time of year, redfish and sea trout are starting to focus more on crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, but if baitfish are present they will still munch on them. This is when I use smaller soft plastic lures and flies when sight fishing. The D.O.A. 3″ Shrimp is a highly effective lure around this time along with any small shadtails rigged weedless like a D.O.A. 3″ CAL. Since the water is cleaner, I like to use more natural colors and nothing too flashy.

Here is a photo of a redfish cruising along a shallow bank looking for small crabs and shrimp, you can expect to see a lot of this when water levels are high.

In the beginning of the month when baitfish were more plentiful, topwater lures such as the “Top Pup” by MirroLure was getting some explosive strikes for Nick this day.

Andy fed some flies to a few Banana River redfish on this drizzly, gloomy day.

Don from Texas didn’t let this windy day bother him. 3″ D.O.A. Cals fooled some redfish and trout on leeward shorelines.

Eric fed this Mosquito Lagoon Black Drum a 3″ D.O.A. Cal in “Arkansas Glow”…a pretty hard thing to do on artificial baits.

Lastly, I would like to announce that I will be upgrading my 2003 Maverick HPX-T, to a brand new 2014 Maverick HPX-S. The HPX-S is a top of the line technical poling skiff designed for shallow water and stealth. While testing out the protoype HPX-S with Maverick’s president Scott Deal, we took it to the elements in the Mosquito Lagoon. It handles the chop very well while running, a smooth dry ride. On the pole, I was pretty impressed…quiet, straight tracking, spins quietly on a dime and poles very well in the wind. The draft is under 6″ with 2 anglers and gear. This skiff paired with the F70 by Yamaha Outboards was beautiful! Jumped up on plane quickly with the stock 3 blade prop and reached up to 40mph wide open.

I am more than excited to start running my charters in this new skiff because of the soft ride, more deck space, and more dry storage compartments. Stay tuned for updates on the build process of my customized 2014 Maverick HPX-S.

Look forward to seeing some Black Drum showing up along the flats along with schools of Redfish as well. Also as Winter approaches and water clears up, big “Gator Trout” will be laying in shallow water sand holes soaking up some sun.

Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River, Indian River News and Report October 2013

The Government Shutdown earlier this month has kept me and a bunch of other guides out the Mosquito lagoon for 16 days. During the shut down period, we all had to fish and guide in other areas that were not on National Refuge property. I chose to fish closer to home in the Banana and Indian Rivers which is my backyard. Luckily the fishing in these waters have been pretty good.

Once the Government Shutdown came to an end and the Mosquito Lagoon opened back up, I thought for sure that the fishing would be on fire…but it was not. Full moon, higher and dirty water was what I witnessed in the Lagoon the day it opened, which made sight fishing very tough. Once we get a couple cold fronts, the water should clear up and the fishing should pick up…that’s what I’m hoping for at least. Here are some fish stories before the shutdown and after…

Willy and Alejandra joined me in the Mosquito Lagoon before the shutdown when the water was clean and the fishing was good. D.O.A. Shadtails were working really well for them this day.

Tony from South Florida joined me for a half day before the shutdown was officially announced. The redfish were crawling in super shallow water and aggressively taking flies.

George and Darren were supposed to fish the Mosquito Lagoon with me, but the Government Shutdown that was announced the day before kept us from doing so. I had to go to plan B and fish in the Banana River which I haven’t fished in months. Not knowing what were were going to get into, we ended up having a stellar day after searching and searching. Juvenile Tarpon, Trout, and Redfish were keeping them busy this day on both flies and D.O.A. Lures.

The next day while the government shutdown was still going on, Merv and Sarah got into the same action.

Kelly from Ohio caught her first Redfish with me in the Banana River using D.O.A. Shadtails.

Once temperatures cool down a bit, the fishing should get a lot better in all 3 Lagoons. Cleaner water and Schooling redfish is what you can expect in the next couple months. The Trout and Black Drum should pick up as well.

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report September 2013

Now that the dead Summer heat is slowly fading away, the fishing is starting to get a lot better for the rest of September and into October in the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, and Banana River. Redfish are starting to school up and eating very aggressively on the deeper flats and for those of you that like casting at tailers and single fish like me, you can find them in the skinnier water with thick grass. The topwater bite has been really good in the mornings on flats with a lot of baitfish activity.

Large trout are starting to roam the flats that are loaded with finger mullet, if you happen to catch one of those big breeder fish, please take the time to revive and release those fish so they can keep the Sea Trout population alive. If you were to take a few home for dinner, the smaller ones taste much better anyways (17″-20″)

Here are one of those breeder “Gator Trout” that I caught on a shrimp pattern while fishing with my buddy Capt. Billy Rotne.

Tarpon fishing will be slowing down once the Fall/Winter temperatures start to cool things down a little bit. That doesn’t mean it will shut down, but just not as good as it has been all through the Summer.

Thomas from South Carolina specifically wanted to fly cast at Tarpon all day here in the Space Coast. It took a few bites until one was hooked and landed.

Eric and Dan joined me in the Lagoon again for some redfish action. The bite remained pretty good throughout the day for them. D.O.A Shadtails got the job done for them.

Mike who is a fly fishing guide up north in Portland Maine comes down to Florida a couple times a year to enjoy Florida’s top notch fishery. This was his first time fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon and I think he fell in love. Mike had shots at tailing and cruising fish in super skinny water, watching the fish chase down and engulf the fly right in front of him. Ryan and Darrin’s first time in the Mosquito Lagoon sight fishing. It was a new experience for them, had a tough time making the right casts but they managed to catch a few on D.O.A. Shadtails.

John joined me on the Mosquito Lagoon to freshen up his fly fishing skills. After having a few bigger fish shake the fly out on him, he made sure that this fish was stuck good when it lifted its head out of the thick grass to slam Johns fly.

October is one of my favorite months to fish. The Fall mullet run, cool temperatures, and topwater action is what I think of in October. Get ready for some good fishing in the next couple months!

August Mosquito Lagoon Report 2013

Same story as July….Scorching hot temps and full of Tarpon! I’ve been down in the FL. Keys for most of August for my annual vacation and lobster season so here’s a short report of what went on in the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, and Banana River in August.

One of those rare days where the Atlantic Ocean was slick calm and the Tarpon off the beaches where happily daisy chaining and laid up on the surface. My buddy Andy and I slipped out for a couple hours to get in on some of the action before the wind got on it.

Back in the Mosquito Lagoon, the redfish bite has been on and off. We have been having a pretty windy Summer so far which has been making it tough to locate fish, with the hot Summer days, the bite has been early and late in the day. Any flat that has an abundance of mullet should hold both Trout and Redfish so work those areas good. The lures that have been working the best for me are D.O.A. Shadtails, Jerkbaits, and Baitbusters in darker colors like “Golden Bream”, “Silver Mullet”, and “Arkansas Glow”. The flies working best for me are any baitfish patterns in deeper water, and shrimpy patterns in the grass.

Kirk from Texas got his first Redfish on fly with me earlier in the month sight fishing cruising and floating fish the Mosquito Lagoon.

Teran and his son Tag from the West Coast of Florida joined me in the Lagoon this month, Tag was on the fly and Teran backed him up with the spin rod. Conditions were windy and Stormy at times, but we had a small window to see a few fish. Tag had a bunch of shots on fly but no takes. Teran gets a nice one before we had to cut the day short running from a storm.

With Fall coming up around the corner, the fish should start schooling up in big numbers and get very aggressive, stay tuned for September report.
